If you've watched every mixing tutorial you can find, learned your process, and picked up all the right plugins, but your mixes still don't sound like the ones you hear on the radio, I want to offer you a different explanation.

It's not your mixing.

Most mixing tutorials show you how to fix problems inside a mix. What they don't tell you is that they're all assuming something is already true before you press play on that first fader move: that the tracks you're mixing were recorded well.

If they weren't, no amount of skill, plugins, or technique fully makes up for it. That's not a knock on your ability. It's just how the signal chain works. Whatever limitations are baked into the recording get carried into every decision you make after that.

The real fix happens before you touch a fader

If you walk into a mix with tracks that already have life, clarity, and punch, everything downstream gets easier. You'll spend less time cleaning things up and more time making the song better. Your mixes will sound more finished, faster, because you're not fighting the material you're working with.
