OLLO X1 Headphones Review: Pro Mixing Performance for $525
Mixing on headphones is no longer a compromise... if you have the right pair.
Over the past couple of months, I’ve been testing the OLLO X1 open-back headphones to see how they stack up against my trusted Sennheiser HD650 and high-end Audeze MM-500.
Here’s my full breakdown.
Build Quality and Comfort
The X1 is handbuilt in Slovenia with a beautiful walnut cup finish, a steel frame, and memory foam earpads. They feel sturdy yet light (390g), and the fully adjustable headband adapts on the fly.
The modular design means every main part - from drivers to ear pads - can be replaced if needed.
Specs and Versatility
With a 32-ohm impedance, the X1 can run from almost anything: a dedicated headphone amp, your audio interface’s headphone out, or even a laptop jack.
That makes them a practical choice for both studio and travel use.
Sound Signature
The X1 offers a neutral, transparent frequency response.
No hype in the bass, mids, or highs. Bass is punchy but honest, mids are clean and revealing, and highs are flat without harshness. The stereo image feels natural, with excellent separation and depth.
Calibration Advantage
Each X1 comes with two levels of calibration: a general factory tuning and a unique, serial-number-specific profile.
You can apply this calibration via any EQ plugin or with the included Realphones USC II plugin, which also offers spatial modes and Harman curve adjustments.
Comparisons
- vs Sennheiser HD650: X1 has a clearer, more revealing midrange and a tighter stereo image.
- vs Audeze MM-500: The MM-500 delivers wider soundstage and micro-detail, but at three times the price. The X1 holds its own remarkably well.
Verdict
At $525, the OLLO X1 is one of the best dynamic driver headphones I’ve mixed with.
They’re comfortable, accurate, and travel-friendly, making them a great companion whether you mix entirely on headphones or need a reliable portable option.
